Bishnu Kumari Waiba, recognized as Parijat in Nepali literature, was born in 1937 to Dr. K.S. Lama, a psychologist and Amrita Moktan, in Darjeeling, India. Parijat was just a little girl when she lost her mother. Therefore, she was brought up by her father and grandparents in the beautiful hills of Darjeeling. Parijat is one of the most prominent talents that Darjeeling has given to Nepal; moreover, she is among one of the very few female literary figures of Nepal who have made their mark in Nepali Literature.

Parijat completed a part of her schooling in Darjeeling. In 1954, she came to Kathmandu and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from Padma Kanya School. A voracious reader and shrewd analyzer of people and human behavior, she had developed a strong interest in Nepali literature from a very young age.

However, her transformation from an innocent girl to a sharp writer and poet was not free of impediments. She had to suffer much physical and emotional torment early on because of many physical ailments she had developed.  But no matter how much pain she was in, she never lost her cheerful and amicable personality. She suffered from paralysis at the age of 26 and was supported her sister all through her life. She never married.

Parijat published her three poem-collection, Akanshya, Parijat Ko Kavita, and Baisalu Bartaman in Dharti in 1959. Her first short story was "Maile Najanmayeko Choro".  However, her talent stands out better in her novels. Out of her ten novels, “Shiris ko Phool” received the greatest popularity and critical acclaim from the elites as well as general readers. “Sirish ko Phool”, often considered based on existentialism, explores and analyzes a psychology of a woman who is repressed by the circumstances surrounding her. Throughout her life, she mostly wrote about love, life and her perspective on them in a way that her thoughts applied to everyone who read her. This was the strongest characteristic of Parijat as a writer.

In 1965, she was awarded the Madan Puraskar for “Sirish ko Phool”. She also received the Sarwashrestha Pandulipi Puraskar, Gandaki Basunahara Puraskar, and Bridabrit. But after “Sirish ko Phool”, it was hard for Parijat to keep up with herself. None of her works after “Sirish ko Phool” is believed to match up the brilliance of “Sirish ko Phool”. However, she was more dedicated to literature and social work after the success of “Shirish ko Phool”.

She was elected a member of the Tribhuwan University and was a part of Ralfa literature movement. She played significant part in the establishment of “Pragati Sil Lekhan Sangh” and worked for Akhil Nepal Mahila Manch, Bandi Sahayata Niyog, and Nepal Manav Adhikar Sangathan. She also led the protest of writers against the bureaucracy of Royal Nepal Academy. She continued to speak up against the discrimination of women persistently. She was also the head of a literary forum called “Bedana”.

Parijat is indisputably the greatest women writer of Nepal who has given us some world- class literary creations. We cannot be sure if we will witness the rise of another Parijat but the immortality of this strong and immensely gifted woman is certain. She died in 1993.
