Lesbians are the part of the society and they have equal rights to live and to be respected. Our Nepalese society is too conservative to give them their rights. Society has always been partial towards them and it’s not fair. People forget that humanity is beyond all religions. God will not be happy seeing one human humiliating the other. Before differentiating the sexual behavior, we should remember that sexual discrimination is as worse if not worse than racial discrimination. And both of which are very inhuman. The biasness that the society has been showing regarding sex is matter of real embarrassment. To think lesbians and their society as social disintegrations is nothing, but the narrowness of mind and negativity people have towards them. People should understand and try to accept them, because they too are a part of or society. We very well know that self humiliation is worse than suicide; keeping this fact in mind our sisters opened MITINI SUPPORT GROUP for the sake of lesbians. We were indeed lucky that our team got the opportunity to talk with the members of Mitini, a lesbian supportive organization which was established in the year 2005. And it has been almost six months since their establishment. Blue diamond society played the major role for the establishment of Mitini. Global fund and Austrian Foundation are actively supporting the society for its welfare and development. The funds received are being used for various purposes such as training and counseling. According to Mitini team currently there are only four staffs in their office but they are hopeful that the number will increase after dashain. The society is also involved in publishing a weekly magazine called "NIL HIRA" where they publish articles regarding gay and lesbian society. Through this magazine they hope they can share news, views and their own feelings to the rest. And they heartily thank the British embassy which is funding to publish this magazine. The main task of this team is to give the suggestions regarding the issues like health, HIV positive/AIDS which certainly are of great help to them. Every Saturday large number gathers there for training, counseling etc. they are from different age groups and the age varies from 22 to 45 years. For counseling, they can call the team on helpline and the calls are increasing glaringly. In average they receive 12/13 call daily. Most of the times parents themselves call them for help on helpline. This shows slowly and steadily parents are also being positive and are accepting the reality of the life. It is really the matter to feel happy because although late the attitude is deviating towards the positive pole. Though the visitors and callers are increasing but still they are not open to share their feeling, views may be because of the conservative society, family members and relatives or they might have not built the courage to say themselves lesbian. Whatever may be the reason but they really need the help, suggestions and counseling to be bold to face the society. The most heart touching moment came when they told us about their future plan. They were planning to get together all the women organizations and get some ideas so they can do some thing to the Nepalese women and our society. Our society is humiliating them ,they can't even walk in the streets and people start pointing them out and play a jokes on them, the situation is pathetic "the pinch of a shoe can only be felt by the one who is wearing it ", despite all the humiliation they are still trying to help ungrateful people and ungrateful society. This reminds us that God lives in the heart of every human it is up to us to know the self divinity a good morality to be learned for every human. They want to avoid the media personality. Journalist approach them for interviews and add spice to the news with little truth and more imaginative story and even print the pictures without their permission. Due to this untrustworthy behavior of the journalists they have reached the peak of problems and humiliations. Media is considered as the mirror of the society, if it reflects the illusionary or imaginative images then we really need to change our opinion about the media personals. If you can't pave the path for others than you really don't have any right to destroy it. And lastly, we urge the society to respect our lesbian sisters. Every one wants to be respected and lead prestigious life. So, we should try to understand that it was not their choice to be lesbians but it was nature that made them so and now it is our duty to give them their right that they deserve.
Astitwa team would like to thank the Mitini members for being very supportive to us and sharing their feeling with us, thanks a lot.
